Overnight, it seems ...

... we've gone from thermals, hot-water bottles and log fires to sun-hats while mowing the lawn, supper on the terrace and a swimming pool that's already warmed up to twenty-two degrees (that's over seventy fahrenheit!).

Let's hope summer's here to stay.

It was disconcerting during the cold patch to learn that the Orkneys were warmer than here. The owner of our local garden centre said the weather in May was "une catastrophe". Hopefully he will now see his customers emerging from their hibernation and planting up their immaculate potagers and buying their gaudy geraniums.

The cuckoo has found his (her?) voice again and I swear I heard my first mosquito as I was gardening yesterday evening

The tiny maize plants in Monsieur F's fields around us have all doubled in size since this morning and the daisies in the long grass on the bank beneath the wild rose that hasn't flowered yet have grown another foot.

  1. Isn't it amazing how plants catch up given a little decent weather!
So many times I used to despair....and then the dun would come out and the borders would just take off.

  2. Hi Helen, and it happens so fast! Fingers crossed, I've got things like dahlias and a fragile blue salvia that I thought I'd lost and suddenly they're showing signs of life. :)

  3. The same has happened here in Caunes....summer has arrived. Wall to wall blue skies and plants visibly growing in front of our eyes. I'm now waiting for the pool to get to 24/25 degrees c. It started at 17 when we opened it last week... 5 year old grandson swam in it at 20 degrees a couple of days ago, and I reckon it will be 23 by the end of today. J.

  4. It's even happened up here in the far north of Scotland. OK, it's probably only 18C (drat that north wind!)but it feels and looks like summer, but without midges so far. As for the plants....

  5. Hi Janice - 25 degrees is my threshold too. :) Hopefully it'll be there in a day or so if the weather holds. :)

  7. On the cusp of changing the portable electric radiators for the fans for a cooling breeze. Indoors has to be 23 deg for the fans to be used overnight. Not quite yet but we have not had the electric duvet on the bed for a while now!
We have 40 baby bunches of dessert grapes on our two garden vines.

  8. Hi Lesley, you might not need your cooling breeze just yet. :( Looks like the good weather is slipping away again for a few days. We're glad we've done the mowing this week. :)
